Helping Others
Change of plans
11/30/16
I decided It could be pretty hard to get the supplies to Haiti so I was talking with my parents and they gave me contact of an African Lady who runs a charity in Africa. She asked me to do a drive for basketballs because the children there have a camp but warn out balls. I plan to run the drive possible in the summer.
How I Am Helping
11/29/16
have sent an email to Hope for Haiti a charity to help Haiti rebuild from the 2010 earthquake. I do not know how I am going to help Haiti but emailing different charities will help give me ideas. Having a drive to collect supplies might be a good start but I will see what they need first.

How Can I Help
11/15/16
My favorite quote is "Be somebody that makes everybody feel like a somebody". Everybody deserves love. Everyone deserves a chance. A single friend, a smile, it only takes one to make a difference in one's life. I want to be the one. I honestly do not know who I want to help but first I think it is important to make people feel human. To feel loved and not a project. I think maybe homeless shelters or soup kitchens might help people feel loved or maybe a place where people sew quilts for people in need. I just do not want people to feel like we are helping out of pity.

Internship
January 17,2017
Today I started my internship at Castle Rock Middle School. I have been close with several of the staff there but I made a special connection with Mrs. McBride, the Dimensions and Literacy teacher at the school. I would check in and tell her what was new. On many occasions she brought up me coming in to help mentor the class. I considered the idea for a while and feel in love with it. The best people and most life impacting people were some of my teachers. Mrs. McBride being one of them. I took the idea to Mosaic teacher Mr.Schneider and with his help we made that dream a reality. Today was my first day and I enjoyed it so much! I have been so giddy since I actually thought about the idea. Even though I was nervous I was even more excited. In class we discussed what makes a good story/storyteller. The students were creating a rubric and I added my thoughts on the topic too. Mrs. McBride loved my input and wants to add it to the final rubric. Overall it was awesome and I cannot wait to go back tomorrow!

Today was a weird day because There was no students and Mrs. McBride was in a meeting. I spent my time with her partner Mrs. Jill. She had me read some of the papers of the students on how they think of themselves as a writer and how they see themselves in the future. I took notes and found that most struggle with hooks, conclusions, transitions, spelling and handwriting. Now I know we all use computers but I believe handwriting is a very important skill and part of your idenity. After talking with Mrs. McBride she said that if we work on handwriting then we loose the content. I am not completely sure. Most students said they are bad at writing because the have poor penmanship. If we worked on it fir a few days I think they could gain the confidence and their future teachers will be able to read their work. I am now on the hunt for good ways to teach hooks, transitions and conclusions. Overall my week was great and I am excited for Tuesday!

Today was a good day! After I met Mrs. McBride she brought me to my lon lost friend and old math tutor Mr. Pomm'e! He did not only help me with math but is an administrator. He has helped me with some of my anxiety and helped me today as well Mrs. McBride let us talk for a while. He helped me talk through my worries about my internship and even gave me advise. He advised me when students come to me for help, ask them questions. This way they can think through things and solve the problem/ answer the question. I took his advise today while helping students ask questions about fire fighters. Overall it was a great experience and tons of fun!

Today gave me anxiety. There was a sub and he had me do everything. I went over the project rubric, lead them through an asking questions/ give advice activity. I went over what they wrote and how to improve it and then they had to write 20 story ideas. After that the day was over. All the sub did was say when to transition into the next activity and the rest was all me. It was frighting but I feel proud that I did it. Last year I could never talk to anyone unless I had to. I decided to do this internship because I wanted to get better at talking to people. Today was a real eye opener to what teachers really do. I really think working with Mrs. McBride will help my communication skills and build my confidence. It was so scary but it was worth it.

Today Mrs. all the pods were in a meetings so Mrs. McBride was at that meeting with a guest speaker. While I was waiting for the meeting to be over Mrs. Jill had me write a list of 10 things I feel went well yester with me ,leading the class. To be honest it was hard for me to come up with things. I felt like it went awful but the sub said otherwise. After I wrote the list the class was back and we worked on finalizing the rubric. Mrs. McBride wants the students to be accountable for it because it is how they will be graded. Overall it was a good day.docs.google.com/document/d/1alTgh5eLDi46_zUWZQLCz6cHPmnAD0PzPSE8LpLvTgo/edit

Today I brought some resources I got from Mrs. Boyd and Mr. Schneider on Transitions and character development. Mrs. McBride made copies of them and was excited to try them out. After that Mrs. McBride expressed to me that she wants examples of voice and good character development. She asked me t search for examples in y books. I have not gotten to far on that hunt yet. After class I went to talk to Mr. Pomm'e about how the day went. He suggested started with children picture books. He gave me the book What do you dp when you have a problem by Kobi Yamada to barrow. This book shows good character developed because it shows how the character changes and people can relate. For example The character had a problem that he did not want. He expresses how things just get worse and he wants to disapear. I like many I know have felt this way, closer to the end he realized he had to face it so he could over come the problem. The character grew as a person and learned to not give up and hide away but to work through the problem. A lesson I a working on. I liked the idea of starching with picture books and move to harder books as they start to get it. Now I am off to look for examples of voice. |

Today I checked in with all the students about what they are writing about. Most are interested in sports so they chose to write about that. After that Isearched through sevral of Mrs. McBride's picture books marking where there is character development.

Today was Innovate so I just went to all the kids and helped them come up with questions to research about a problem like natural disasters. So far these past two days have been pretty low action because the students have been writing their first drafts.

Today I was accompanied by Ethan Capp. He too is a Mosaic student and is apart of Mosaic TV. He wanted to spotlight me in one of the episodes. It made me nervous but I am working on facing my fears. He filmed as I talked with students and even interviewed both Mrs. McBride and I. I hope the episode inspires oher Mosaic students to reach out of their comfort zones.

This week I looked for character development and voice. I also filled out resources as examples for the students. Mrs.McBride has empathized that the students learn better when showed rather than told. Thursday was just a work day to finish up work and they worked on annotating excerpts from "The Glass Castle." This week was a pretty gpod week. This coming week I can be of more use as the students edit and revise.

This week was great because I got to help several kids revise. Mrs. McBride had me pick off of a list of a few students to for sure help. It went well because I left them comments on their stories and would help them reword things. It was a great feeling because some came back to me for help and would want me to read their stories. In the end it was good because I felt more confident when talking to the students.

Today was great because because the students shared their stories in table groups then some shared out to the whole class. Before hand Mrs. McBride asked me to bring in some of my writing to share. I participated in a group and left comments for them. Mrs. McBride also asked me to share my writing to the class so they know my skill. I was very nervous but I think it went well. The girls I was in a group with left me comments on my poem. I am trying to go out of my comfort zone because that is the only way you can grow. I really can do hard things if I try and do not say "no". That evening she sent me a text that read "I am in awe of how much you've honed and refined your talent since *th grade. You have a Masterful and poetic command of language. Some writers strive their whole lives to get to the level you have already achieved." It meant so much to me for her to go out of her way to tell me those kind words.

Today was Mr. Pomme's birthday! I brought him in some goodies and we talked for a little bit. After I visited him it was time for class to start. Today the students finished reading their stories. We talked about what feedback they got. Then they did Reading Plus. While they were doing that Mrs. McBride gave me feedback on my poem. She told me it was kind of hard to find good criticism for me but gave me some mentor text from Gorge Orwell. I feel like I did a pretty good job consideering Orwel's advice bit I plan to talk it over with Mr. Schneider.

This week had its up and downs. Tuesday we celebrating my birthday which was so sweet. Mrs. Jill brought me cupcakes and I just felt so loved. Wednedday was a real struggle. I was in shock of how disrespectful Innov8 students were to each other and Mrs. McBride. They ignored me and Mrs. McBride , and were mean to each other and through fits about everything. It was just an eye opener of how difficult being a teacher can be. Thursday was good because the class were working on the next challenge. I worked with several students on themes and topics and people to interview. The next challenge is a journalism challenge. They all have great ideas but one in particular I know is going places. For the last challenge he wanted to write a life changing story and now he wants to do a project on how to be a good friend. He made my week. It is so important to be a good friend, I strive to be one everyday.

Today we did bucket fillers which are writing comments to each other. I wrote one to all my students. I spent the whole time writing and coloring the letters. This act is real important because I think we all go through a time where we feel worthless. This activity is a great way to find the good in yourself and others.

Because the first challenge is over today we began the second challenge. The mentor that Mrs. McBride is basing the challenge on is Brandon Stanton, creator of Humans of New York. He a photographer and journalist. This challenge is centered toward communication. Today we looked at Stanton's book and determined what we would consider meaningful. After that we watched a clip on how Stanton approaches people. It was very interesting. because even though he is famous but he is real and funny and full of compassion. Someone I can look up too. |
